District Literacy Information Night at the Schaumburg Library on September 22 provided a wonderful opportunity to network with fellow Rotarians from clubs throughout District 6440.  Past projects were reviewed.  Projects currently underway as well as those being considered for the future were also discussed.  The most frequently repeated request was for literacy information.  As a result, the District Literacy Committee is pleased to share the following suggestions:

The best way to find information regarding literacy is to go to the District 6440 web site: rotarydistrict6440.org.  Click on “Literacy” on the left side of the screen.  Then under Downloads, click on Literacy Web Sites.  You will find helpful web sites from global (Rotary International) to national (Read.gov) to local organizations that support area literacy programs.  These web sites are a good way to start.  You will discover more as you explore these and other sites.

If you want to learn more about other clubs’ literacy projects, click on “Literacy Recognition Awards 2010” or “Club Literacy Projects 2007."  Both contain excellent descriptions of successful literacy projects undertaken by area clubs.  You can contact a club whose project interests you.  Rotarians are always willing to share their successful projects with other clubs.

For more resources on the District literacy site, take a look at the Reach Out and Read program or the Dictionary project.  Some projects are short and easily completed while others require more effort and commitment.   Whatever your club is able to do, please DO a literacy project.

Of course, you can contact Linda Cesario  or any other member of the District Literacy Committee.  Every effort will be made to answer your questions or provide a speaker for your club.

The Literacy Committee hopes to see every club in District 6440 identify and work on a literacy project.  Together, we can achieve this goal.
